This structure measures more than 10 meters high and it\u2019s made up of nine staggered bodies very similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/kukulkan-pyramid\/\">Kukuklan Pyramid<\/a>, to such degree of resembling a replica, with the difference of having less height and a frieze covered with mythological reliefs decorated in its corners with the effigy of the god Chaac similar to the ones found in <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/temple-warriors-chichen-itza\/\">The Warriors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/venus-temple-chichen-itza\/\">Venus Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/The-Ossuary-in-Chichen-Itza-upper-part.jpg\" alt=\"The Ossuary in Chichen Itza upper part\" class=\"wp-image-636\"\/><figcaption>The Ossuary in Chichen Itza upper part<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This structure is part of the group of buildings that with the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/tomb-platform-chichen-itza\/\">Tomb Platform<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sacb\u00e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sacbe<\/a> Number 15 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/xtoloc-cenote-chichen-itza\/\">Xtoloc Cenote<\/a>, repeat the architectural pattern found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/kukulkan-pyramid\/\">Kukulkan Pyramid<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/venus-temple-chichen-itza\/\">Temple of Venus<\/a>, the Sacbe Number 1 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/sacred-cenote-chichen-itza\/\">Sacred Cenote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the upper part of the Ossuary, between the first two carved serpents, there is an entrance lined with stone, which descends vertically to the base of the pyramid, beyond a set of stone stairs and entering 12 meters deep into a cave where seven tombs were discovered along with jade objects, copper bells, rock crystals and shells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"width:100%; height:400px;\" src=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/360\/Ossuary-Chichen-Itza.html\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting aspect of this structure, is that when going down to the tombs, there\u2019s an entry through a natural tunnel that the natives participating in the first explorations assured measured more than 20 kilometers and that it goes into another nearby Mayan city, probably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backyardnature.net\/travel\/yaxunah\/history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yaxun\u00e1<\/a>. According to tradition, this tunnel or cavern represents the gate between the world of the dead and paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/The-Ossuary-in-Chichen-Itza-from-the-side.jpg\" alt=\"The Ossuary in Chichen Itza from the side\" class=\"wp-image-637\"\/><figcaption>The Ossuary in Chichen Itza from the side<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Location of the Ossuary in Chichen Itza<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ossuary in <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/chichen-itza\">Chichen Itza<\/a> is part of the Central Group, and it\u2019s the first big structure you\u2019ll see when coming from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/kukulkan-pyramid\/\">Kukulk\u00e1n Pyramid<\/a>. Right in front of it is <g class=\"gr_ gr_20 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"20\" data-gr-id=\"20\">a round<\/g> platform, the Venus Platform, and then the <a href=\"https:\/\/mayanpeninsula.com\/tomb-platform-chichen-itza\/\">Tomb Platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1EPvsmskOPW6HkjoYj1nDUVOmSncpHxLo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ossuary in Chichen Itza is also known as the Great Priest&#8217;s Tomb.
